Damir Kreilach scored in the 91st minute to give Real Salt Lake a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls in Sandy, Utah, on Saturday. Kreilach scored the first goal of the season for RSL (0-0-2, 2 points) with an uncontested header from six yards off a cross by Aaron Herrera. Cristian Casseres Jr. scored in the 13th minute for the Red Bulls (1-0-1, 4 points). The Red Bulls are 0-6-6 in Utah and 0-6-3 at Rio Tinto Stadium in the regular season.
They did win the 2008 Western Conference championship in the venue. RSL led in shots 21-4 and Red Bulls keeper David Jensen made two saves. Casseres, a 20-year-old Venezuelan midfielder, scored less than two minutes after Jensen made an outstanding move How to life hacks keep the match scoreless. Kreilach had a knockdown header off a corner by Albert Rusnak that took a bounce in front of Jensen, who dove left to push the ball off the right post and out of harm.
Casseres responded with a 30-yard strike that dipped in front of Zac MacMath (one save) into the lower left corner. RSL’s hard luck continued when Kyle Duncan in the 19th minute and Sean Davis in the 36th cleared shots off the Red Bulls goal line to preserve the lead. Duncan, who had a goal and two assists in a 3-2 win against Cincinnati FC in the season opener, slid in front of a shot by Kreilach at the right post. Davis got his right foot waist-high on an attempt by Corey Baird and kicked the ball away.
Salt Lake had the tying goal by Douglas Martinez overturned in the 70th minute after video review because his header hit his left arm to send the ball into the goal.
