What Platforms Can “Angry Birds” Be Played On?
Apple
The first version of Angry Birds was offered in December 2009 through Apple’s App Store and was designed to run on iPhones, which ran Apple’s mobile operating system, now known as iOS. The first game consisted of 21 levels of gameplay in a single chapter titled “Poached Eggs.” Rovio released an updated version of the game in February 2010, adding two chapters to the game and additional levels. Angry Birds can also be played on the iPod Touch and the iPad.
Android
Angry Birds was released for the Android operating system in mid-October 2010 and was initially available through GetJar before appearing in the Android Marketplace. The game was released as a free app and was supported by in-game advertising. Paid versions of the game became available soon afterwards and were offered through the Android Marketplace and also on Amazon’s website. The Angry Birds game plays on Android-based smartphones that run the Android operating systems version 1.6 or later, and requires OpenGL ES2.0 support.
Other Phone Operating Systems
Angry Birds became available for Nokia phones in mid 2010 and was soon ported to other mobile platforms, including the Palm Pre phone and Nokia phones running the Symbian OS. Hewlett-Packard phones that run the webOS operating system release 1.4.5 or higher, such as the Veer smartphone, also support the game. Microsoft’s Windows 7 phones, introduced in late 2010, also can run Angry Birds.
Game Consoles
During 2010, Rovio announced that it would begin porting its popular Angry Birds game to gaming consoles, including Sony’s PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platforms. Sony’s PlayStation 3 console and PlayStation Portable game became Angry Birds-capable in January 2011 and offered an initial 63 levels of game play. Within four months the game had been downloaded 1 million times by Sony players. Wii versions and 3DS versions of the game are expected to be released in late 2011.
Tablets
Angry Birds runs on a variety of touch-screen tablets, including the HP TouchPads running Hewlet-Packard’s webOS operating system. The Blackberry platform is slated to have an official release of Angry Birds for its PlayBook tablet in mid to late 2011. Android tablets, such as the Asus, Toshiba, Aspire and Samsung Galaxy S tablets, can also run the Angry Birds games. The Barnes and Noble Nook Color e-reader, which runs a version of the Android OS, also runs a version of Angry Birds that’s available from the Nook store.
Personal Computers and Browsers
Rovio Mobile, the company behind Angry Birds, is continuing to release the game on additional platforms. The game can be played on Apple computers running Mac OS X 10.6.6 and later, and linux wine personal computers running the Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Linux users running Ubuntu and Mint versions of the open-source operating system have been able to run Angry Birds.
